Qualcuno si è fermato con la neve fino alle ginocchia, ha puntato una macchina fotografica a scatola dritta verso il sole basso invernale, e ha comunque premuto l'otturatore, secondo la fiduciosa convinzione amatoriale degli anni '60 secondo cui, se la scena appariva bella a occhio nudo, la pellicola sarebbe stata d'accordo. Non lo è stata. Il sole si è appiattito in una morbida stella sovraesposta dietro i rami, il primo piano è diventato quasi nero, e le betulle sono ridotte a tratti d'inchiostro contro il bagliore.

Questo è il classico fallimento della fotografia domestica di prima che qualcuno possedesse un esposimetro degno di fiducia: si fotografa verso la luminosità, perché è lì che sta la parte bella. I rami carichi di neve, abbastanza pesanti da piegarsi sotto il proprio peso bianco, sarebbero stati il vero motivo della gita, una passeggiata fatta apposta per vedere il bosco così vestito. Invece la macchina ha registrato soprattutto ciò che non riusciva a gestire, lasciando il bosco reale al ricordo.

Ciò che sopravvive è meno una fotografia di alberi che una fotografia dello strizzare gli occhi contro l'inverno, il che è probabilmente il documento più onesto. Nessuno, negli anni '60, portava un treppiede o un filtro nel bosco per uno scatto occasionale di un pomeriggio, e si vede in ogni centimetro sottoesposto sotto la linea degli alberi.
