レニングラードの広い大通りを人々が行き交っている。頭上には、注視しているものの何も見えていない金色のアドミラルティの尖塔がそびえている。この種の壮大さは皇帝が設計した都市では一般的であり、後に労働者に奉仕するために適応されたが、彼らが必要としていたのはおおむね単に通りを横切ることだった。
歩道では、数人の市民が露店商人から商品を購入するという重大な取引に従事している。計画経済における必要な迂回路である。歩行者たちは、自分たちがどこへ向かっているか、あるいは少なくともどこへ向かうべきかを知っている人々の決然とした歩調で進んでいく。これらはしばしば同じことであった。

画像は1970年代のソビエト連邦レニングラード（現在はSt. Petersburg）の街路風景を示している。
