かつて人々は、計り知れない富が少しの水とほんの数回のシャベル一杯分の距離にあると確信して、これらの精密な木造構造物を建設した。これに要した努力は、やがて非常に、非常に裕福になるであろう未来への確固たる信念を示唆している。

いま1970年代になると、これらは砂漠の忘れられた一隅にある単なる腐朽した木の板であり、楽観主義が地質学と出会うときに何が起こるかの証拠である。価値を抽出する壮大な計画は、とうの昔に蒸発してしまった。

The historian's note

これらの構造物は、砂金採鉱操業で使用される一般的な機器である、木製の水路またはスライスボックスの遺跡である。水路は遠隔地の水源から採鉱地点へ水を運搬し、スライスボックスは流れる水を利用して、重力により金などの重い鉱物と軽いヘドロを分離した。

このようなシステムは19世紀から20世紀初頭の大規模採鉱に不可欠であり、特に水が希少だが鉱石処理に不可欠な乾燥地域で活用されていた。1970年代におけるこれらの放棄状態は、これらの特定の採鉱方法の衰退と、多くの地域における容易に採取できる鉱床の枯渇を反映している。

木材の腐朽は、乾燥した気候で要素にさらされた材料の典型的な特性であり、遅い分解により構造物が活発な使用中止から数十年にわたって遺跡として存続することが可能である。
