People once built these elaborate wooden structures, convinced that untold riches were just a little water and a few shovelfuls away. The sheer effort involved suggests a firm belief in a future where they would be very, very wealthy.
Now, in the 1970s, these are simply decaying wood planks in a forgotten corner of the desert, a testament to what happens when optimism meets geology. The grand plans to extract value have long since evaporated.
The landscape, meanwhile, continues its slow, indifferent work, gradually subsuming all evidence of humanity's more ambitious, and ultimately temporary, pursuits.
The historian's note
These structures are the remnants of wooden flumes or sluice boxes, common equipment used in placer mining operations. Flumes transported water from a distant source to the mining site, whilst sluice boxes used the flowing water to separate heavy minerals like gold from lighter sediments through gravity.
Such systems were integral to large-scale mining during the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in arid regions where water was scarce but essential for processing ore. Their abandoned state in the 1970s reflects the decline of these specific mining methods and the exhaustion of accessible deposits in many areas.
The decay of the wood is typical of materials left exposed to the elements in dry climates, where slow decomposition allows structures to persist as ruins for many decades after active use has ceased.
