Una flota gris de pequeños arrastreros comerciales está amarrada a lo largo de un muelle de trabajo, con los mástiles desnudos y las antenas de radio erizadas como un bosque que nunca echa hojas. Este es el extremo funcional de Fisherman's Wharf, de cuando el muelle todavía significaba pescadores, y los barcos que traían gallineta y cangrejo eran el sentido mismo del barrio, y no un simple telón de fondo para uno solo.

El ornamentado edificio blanco detrás de ellos, todo aguilones y vidrio, pertenecía a una ciudad que ya había empezado a arreglar su frente industrial para los visitantes, aunque los pilotes y los cascos descascarados todavía no se habían enterado.
