Cerca de vinte viajantes se dispuseram ao longo de um tanque de piscicultura em uma única fileira obediente, a postura universal de um grupo de excursão de ônibus a quem se disse "reúnam-se para uma foto, por favor". As mulheres usam cardigãs e saias decentes, os homens terno e gravata, porque nos anos 1950 um passeio na natureza pelas Canadian Rockies ainda era uma ocasião que exigia roupa de domingo, não a ideia de que férias na montanha pudessem envolver sujar-se.

Atrás deles, um chalé de toras com telhado verde faz o trabalho pesado cenográfico, e uma pequena placa em um suporte presumivelmente explica o que nada no tanque a seus pés, embora ninguém na fotografia pareça estar lendo. A estrutura metálica que se projeta na água sugere uma grade de piscicultura ou um dispositivo de alimentação, o tipo de fato técnico que grupos turísticos aceitam sem curiosidade porque o guia já explicou e seria falta de educação perguntar de novo.

O que a fotografia realmente preserva é o ritual em si: um grupo de excursão prestando homenagem a um mirante ao ficar de pé diante dele, vestido como se as montanhas também estivessem observando.
