20人ほどの旅行者が孵化場の池に沿って一列に整然と並んでいる。バスツアーで「では、写真のためにお集まりください」と言われたときの、あの万国共通の立ち姿である。女性たちはカーディガンとよそ行きのスカート、男性たちはスーツにネクタイという出で立ちだ。1950年代、Canadian Rockiesへの自然探訪はまだ、山での休暇が汚れることを伴うかもしれないという発想ではなく、よそ行きの服装がふさわしい行事だったのである。

背後では緑の屋根の丸太小屋が景観の大半を担い、台に立てられた小さな看板がおそらく彼らの足元の池を泳ぐものについて説明しているのだろうが、写真の中に読んでいる者は誰も見当たらない。水中に突き出た金属製の枠は孵化場用の格子か給餌装置と思われるが、その種の工学的な事実をツアー客たちは好奇心も持たずに受け入れている。ガイドがすでに説明済みであり、二度尋ねるのは失礼にあたるからだ。

この写真が実際に記録しているのは儀式そのものである。すなわち、バス旅行の一行が景勝地の前に立つことでそれに敬意を表す行為であり、まるで山々にも見られているかのような装いで臨んでいるのだ。
