Somebody built this thing themselves, out here, with no permit office to argue with them about it. A raw timber A-frame sits half-sunk in the current, tethered to the bank by a cable that vanishes into the spruce, the kind of structure a trapper or a placer miner threw together because the nearest hardware store was a floatplane ride away.

In interior Alaska in the 1960s, a man with a chainsaw and some cable was his own engineering department, and nobody checked his math before the river did. The frame looks purpose-built for something specific, a fish wheel mount, a cable ferry, a dredge anchor, and whichever it was, it was judged good enough by the only inspector that mattered, which was whether it survived breakup.

The forest behind it does not care either way. Black spruce and birch have been standing along rivers like this one for longer than anyone has been building things to float on it, and they will still be standing after this particular frame has rotted, silted over, and become a story nobody quite remembers the details of.
