She has posed beside the car the way an entire generation posed beside cars in the 1950s, on the theory that a good automobile reflected well on the household that owned it. The dress is pressed, the pearls are on, the hair has been set into curls that took real effort and would not survive an open window at highway speed, all of which suggests this stop was on the way to somewhere that mattered, not the grocery store.
Her hand rests on the door handle rather than pulling it, because the photograph came first and the errand came second, a small ordering of priorities that made perfect sense at the time. Behind her the neighborhood does its own quiet reporting: a single-story house, new power lines strung on poles, the open lawns of a subdivision built for exactly this kind of car and exactly this kind of Sunday.
Someone thought a two-tone sedan was worth memorializing alongside a person, and for a while that was a reasonable thing to think. The car outlasted the dress, the hairstyle, and probably the marriage it may have been photographed for, which is the usual arrangement between people and their automobiles.
