A girl of about ten stands at an airport observation fence in the 1950s, dressed up for what was then an ordinary family outing: watching the planes. She wears a red blouse with a bow and a striped skirt cinched at the waist, her hair set in the careful waves of the era. Behind the chain-link fence, aircraft sit parked and ready, and the runway stretches toward the horizon—a public space where children were still brought on Sunday afternoons to see the machines come and go. Airports then had no security perimeter because no one had yet imagined a reason to keep people out. She stands with the composed bearing of a child who understood she was being recorded for posterity, before the act of watching planes became something you did alone, on a screen, waiting for a departure time.
