A woman in a red dress and a man in a dark suit with fedora stand at a chain-link fence on an airport observation deck, watching a propeller aircraft taxi past. The fence is the only thing between them and the tarmac—no barrier, no ID check, no perimeter security. Behind them, hangars and a commercial airliner sit in full view, the whole operation open to anyone who wanted to bring a family out on a clear afternoon to watch planes. This was ordinary recreation then, the way you took someone out on a Sunday to stand behind a fence and see what was happening. The aircraft moving past looks to be in the middle of its working life, indifferent to whether it was being watched.
