Caught mid-task and mid-glance back at the camera, a woman in a pencil skirt and white blouse stands at a chest of drawers in a room that is mostly finished — the walls are painted, the floor lamp is in place, the built-in wardrobe is closed — but the whole space still has the slightly provisional feel of a house that moved in before it was entirely decided. The chartreuse walls and floor lamp with a hand-painted shade are doing a great deal of work to assert that this is a home, and not simply a structure with furniture in it.

The dresser is loaded with the small bottles and personal items that represent daily life being lived, which is probably why someone thought the moment worth recording. In the 1950s, the new camera and the new house arrived at roughly the same time for a great many American families, and so the first subject of the first rolls was often simply the house, proof that it existed and that someone lived there confidently.

Through the doorway behind her, the white cabinets of the kitchen are just visible — the other room that the decade required a woman to be photographed in. She looks back with the expression of someone who agreed to be in the picture and is now waiting to find out how long that agreement is going to take.
