Two girls occupy a motel or rental room on what is clearly a hot day — the older one sprawled in a red vinyl chair wearing shorts and a midriff-baring top, grinning at the camera with the ease of someone on vacation. A wall-mounted window air-conditioning unit looms above her head, its power cord dangling in a long arc, and the room has dressed itself for the era: floral curtains with an autumn-leaf print, a gold drum-shade lamp, and a small doll in a red dress standing sentinel on the side table. The baseboard heater below the window confirms this is a building that takes both seasons seriously. In the 1950s, a window air conditioner was still a status object — the kind of amenity that made a motel room worth mentioning when you got home — and whoever booked this room wanted the family to know they had one. The doll, placed decoratively on the table rather than played with, suggests someone decided this was the kind of room you posed in.
