A theatrical witch puppet hangs suspended in a darkened studio, her painted face tilted toward the camera with the fixed, slightly menacing grin that made her suitable for children's programming in an era when the line between entertainment and mild terror was not considered a problem worth solving. The puppet wears a tall blue witch's hat with a star, a black gown embroidered with yellow stars and moons, and grips a wooden wand—the whole thing lit by studio lamps that cast her in an eerie blue monochrome that was partly the film stock and partly the deliberate mood. Behind her, a camera operator leans in to capture the moment, and studio equipment frames the shot, suggesting this is documentation of a broadcast or filmed performance, not a set itself. The puppet's construction—the papier-mâché face, the yarn hair, the careful detail work—speaks to the labor that went into what would air for ninety seconds in some afternoon children's program that has since vanished from all record. Someone built her to be frightening in the way that made small children in the 1950s sit very still in front of television sets.
