A diver hovers inside the corroded doorframe of a sunken vessel, framed by encrusted steel plating and the ghostly blue-green of depth, at a moment when recreational scuba diving was roughly four years old and its practitioners were still working out whether the ocean floor was a place to visit or a place to be claimed by. Cousteau and Gagnan had handed the aqualung to the world in 1943, and by the 1950s a small fraternity of men had decided the correct use of this technology was to swim into the rotting hulks of ships, which their fathers' generation had considered a strictly fatal hobby. The diver looks back at the camera with the calm expression of someone who has fully committed to an idea before asking whether it was a good one. Somewhere below him the seafloor coral glows orange at the frame's edge, indifferent to being the most decorative thing in a photograph that is otherwise entirely about corrosion. The wreck's burst valves and stripped fittings suggest a working vessel rather than a warship, though in the 1950s Pacific and Caribbean dive communities both were equally available and equally unexplored, and divers tended not to ask too many questions before going in.
