A museum in the 1950s furnished one of its period rooms with a Christmas tree that had been rendered in pure black silhouette, the kind of modernist impulse that institutions embraced when they wanted to seem contemporary and serious rather than sentimental. It stood against a window dressed with lace curtains, the contradiction being so absolute that it read as deliberate—a tree that repudiated the very warmth and cheer it was supposed to embody. Behind it, a radiator promised heat that the room's clinical blue cast suggested it was failing to deliver.

The door stands open to this carefully curated cold, and on the desk sits a single object that might be a model or a specimen, the kind of thing museums placed on surfaces to prove their authority over the world. Someone had arranged all this with the confidence of people who believed a room could teach visitors something by withholding comfort from them, that severity and good taste were the same thing. The photograph catches what the museum-maker never intended: a display so committed to restraint that it suggests no one involved had asked whether anyone would actually want to be in it.
