Wild roses, operating on a biological imperative older than most human institutions, persist in blooming across improbable substrates. This particular cluster, ignoring the geological impracticalities of its location, fulfills its genetic programming to produce delicate pink flowers, undeterred by the evident lack of topsoil.

A mid-20th-century photographer, perhaps captivated by this small act of botanical defiance, chose to record the moment. In the 1950s, people still largely appreciated nature for its steadfastness, before they began categorizing every spontaneous plant as either a "weed" or a "potential cash crop."
