Someone in the 1960s stood inside a doorway the Inca had cut with no metal tools and no wheel, and used it exactly as a modern photographer would: as a frame. The trapezoid shape, wider at the base than the lintel, was standard engineering practice for a civilization living on top of an earthquake fault, though the tourist peering through it was probably thinking about composition, not seismic loads.
Through the gap, a lone figure stands atop a distant outcrop, doing what visitors to Machu Picchu have done since the site reopened to the wider world in the twentieth century: climbing something for the view, then standing very still so someone else could take a picture of them being small against something large. The stonework below shows the lower, rougher construction typical of terrace retaining walls, in contrast to the precision-fitted blocks framing the doorway itself, a reminder that even a sacred citadel had a back-of-house.
By the 1960s the site had become a fixture of international travel itineraries, reachable by rail and bus in a way its builders never intended it to be reached by anyone. The doorway has outlasted the empire that built it, the road that reached it, and very likely the sandals worn by whoever climbed up for that view.
The historian's note
Machu Picchu, the fifteenth-century Inca royal estate in the Cusco region of Peru, was constructed under the reign of Pachacuti and abandoned within a century, its remoteness on a ridge between two peaks keeping it hidden from Spanish colonial forces. Hiram Bingham's 1911 expedition brought it to international attention, and by the 1960s it had become an established destination on the emerging South American tourist circuit, accessible via the Cusco rail line and a switchback road built up from the Urubamba River valley.
The trapezoidal doorway is a hallmark of Inca stonework, its inward-leaning jambs providing structural resistance in a seismically active zone without the use of mortar. The precision ashlar masonry visible around the opening, fitted without iron tools, remains one of the site's most studied engineering achievements.
Machu Picchu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and remains one of the most visited archaeological sites in the Western Hemisphere.
