Somebody pulled the car over at a scenic turnout in the Sierra Nevada, rolled down the window, and took the picture that everyone took at that turnout: pines in silhouette, a snow-loaded ridge, the kind of view a 1960s family vacation was organized around finding. The idea was uncomplicated wilderness, the sort of shot that proved you had gotten away from it all for a week.

What the camera also caught, because cameras are indifferent to intention, was a sky crossed by jet contrails, three or four of them, cutting through the same blue the postcard needed to look empty. Commercial air travel had only recently become a routine, huge business, and cross-country routes now ran directly over country that still advertised itself as untouched. Nobody in the car was thinking about air traffic when they framed the mountain.

The result is a nature photograph with the jet age scribbled across the top of it in white chalk, proof that even the wilderness snapshot of 1960s America came with a ceiling full of commuters.

The historian's note

The Sierra Nevada range, straddling the California-Nevada border near Lake Tahoe, became a major postwar destination for automobile tourism and winter sports as interstate highways and ski resort development expanded access to high-elevation terrain in the 1950s and 1960s. Family road trips to mountain overlooks and passes were a defining feature of American middle-class leisure in this period, often documented on color slide film for later projection at home.

The contrails visible in the sky reflect the rapid growth of commercial jet aviation following the introduction of jets like the Boeing 707 in the late 1950s, which established transcontinental flight paths across the western United States. By the 1960s such contrails were a common, if usually unremarked, feature of skies over remote landscapes previously seen as isolated from industrial and technological activity.
