A tourist destination in its prime, before anyone worried about the experience being documented or spoiled by documentation—the Rhine Falls plunges past limestone cliffs where moss clings to the rock face and villas on the far bank stand serene in the afternoon light, their white railings suggesting the continental comfort of the 1950s. A small figure stands in the mist near the water's edge, having descended to the viewing platform to be closer to the roar and spray, the way visitors have done for two centuries now, though this one got themselves photographed in colour film as proof of the journey. The compositional choice—framing the cascade through the natural arch of the eroded cliff, the snaking mist rising up the bank like a held breath—suggests someone with a camera who knew this view already, who positioned themselves not for discovery but for confirmation.
