Whoever stood at the edge of these rapids to take this picture was doing so from a position that a sensible person would have reconsidered. The water has that tannin-stained amber color typical of rivers draining through the boreal forest of the upper Great Lakes — iron-rich soil, cedar roots, and decades of leaf matter all contributing to a shade that looks alarming but is entirely natural and has nothing to do with the industrial activity everyone immediately suspects.
Door County in the early 2000s was promoting itself aggressively as a destination for people who wanted nature without inconvenience — kayak rentals, scenic overlooks, tidy interpretive signs. A rapid like this one exists slightly outside that agreement. The granite ledge splitting the current in two is old enough to have watched the last glaciers retreat and has no particular interest in becoming a landmark.
The shot was taken close to the brink, which is the only way to make whitewater look like whitewater rather than a slightly energetic stream. The person behind the camera understood that instinctively, or was simply standing where the path ended and the guardrail hadn't been installed yet.
