A concrete dam spillway discharges a massive torrent of water with the kind of casual power that made mid-century Americans believe they had finally mastered nature itself. The structure is businesslike—a corrugated metal control tower bolted to the spillway lip, the kind of industrial apparatus that suggested competence and permanent dominion over water systems. The landscape beyond is forested and unspoiled, the dam inserted into it like a man-made afterthought, which is exactly what engineers thought it was: necessary infrastructure that would last forever and solve the problem once and for all. The roiling water, the geometric concrete, the distant hills—everything here is solving a problem nobody was asking to be solved quite this way, with the confidence of an era that had not yet learned that such structures age, fail, and require maintenance beyond the original budget. This is what managed nature looked like when management was still a one-way street.
