Every summer in the 1950s, several million Americans drove the family car to Niagara Falls on the unspoken understanding that standing next to something enormous would count as a vacation. The Horseshoe Falls obliged by being genuinely enormous — six thousand tons of Lake Erie water per second dropping a hundred and seventy feet — which meant that no matter how much postcards had oversold it, the real thing still won the argument.
At the base of the gorge, dwarfed to near-invisibility by the cataract beside them, two figures stand on the observation platform at Table Rock, which Ontario Parks maintained with great civic pride on the theory that the best view of a waterfall is the one where the mist ruins your clothes. The platform juts out on bare rock directly beside the brink, a piece of mid-century public infrastructure that trusted visitors to exercise their own judgment about proximity to a thousand-foot curtain of falling water.
Across the gorge, the low institutional skyline of the American side is barely visible through the haze — a reminder that this particular natural wonder runs a two-country box office. The people at Table Rock have their backs to the camera and their faces toward the falls, which is the correct priority, and the only sensible choice anyone in this scene made.
