Somewhere on the road into Parkdale, a plank of hand-lettered civic pride announces that the town welcomes you, as though the matter had been put to a vote and passed unanimously. The credit line below, By The Booster Club, was the standard signature of an era when small towns organized entire volunteer societies for the sole purpose of being cheerful at strangers on their behalf.

Booster clubs of the 1950s did not wait for reputation to arrive on its own; they built it, planted it in the roadside grass, and repainted it every few summers whether the paint needed it or not. The sign faces an empty two-lane road because the welcome was never really for a crowd, it was for the occasional passing car that might otherwise drive through without noticing anything worth staying for.

The grass has since grown up around its feet the way it does around anything a town builds and then leaves to its own devices, confident that goodwill, once painted, needs no further maintenance.
