Someone has just handed this baby over for the obligatory first portrait, the kind every household with a new camera and a new arrival produced without exception in the 1960s. The light is bad, the flash is worse, and nobody in the room cares, because the point was never good lighting. The point was proof: this person exists now, and here is the bedspread to prove which house they were born into.
The infant's hair stands up in the electric little peak newborns get, and the eyes have that unfocused, faintly suspicious squint of a creature two weeks into consciousness. A hand-me-down sleeper in pale blue does the work later generations would leave to a onesie with a designer logo on it. Whoever is holding the baby is cropped almost entirely out of the frame, which was standard practice then too, since the adult was never the subject and knew it.
The quilted bedspread and the single flat pillow behind them belong to a bedroom built for function rather than photographing well, on the assumption that no one would ever need to look at it again. Someone did, eventually, need to look at it again, which is the whole reason this picture survived long enough to need a caption.
