Somebody decided this particular rock was an excellent place to build a stronghold, a decision that required an impressive amount of effort given the available technology in ancient Greece. Over centuries, various empires agreed, piling more defenses on top of previous ones, creating a layered monument to human persistence and questionable strategic planning that still stands in the 1970s.
Below the ancient walls, a village of white buildings clings to the hillside, a testament to the local preference for inconveniently steep climbs and consistent color schemes. Vacationers from colder climates would find this an exotic escape, where the main activities involved sitting by the bay or climbing to see what past generations had optimistically fortified.
The surrounding landscape remains mostly scrub, a gentle reminder that not everything requires human intervention or careful cultivation. The clear Aegean Sea, however, required no human improvement to be considered a desirable destination.
The historian's note
This panoramic view captures the Acropolis of Lindos and the surrounding village of Lindos on the island of Rhodes, Greece, during the 1970s. The site's strategic location, dominating a natural harbor, led to its continuous fortification from antiquity through the Byzantine and medieval periods. The prominent structures visible on the acropolis include the ancient Temple of Athena Lindia and the fortifications built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 14th century.
Below the acropolis, the village of Lindos is characterized by its traditional whitewashed houses and narrow streets, a style that reflects centuries of local building practices. The bay in the foreground, with its sandy beach, served as a natural port for millennia and was already a popular spot for visitors by this era.
The 1970s marked a significant period for tourism in the Greek islands, as international travel became more accessible and affordable. Destinations like Rhodes began to experience a substantial increase in visitors, drawn by the unique blend of ancient history, picturesque villages, and Mediterranean climate.
