Two tourists sit cross-legged on the shop floor, the universal posture of people who have been told the good rugs are best appreciated from below, while three dealers hold a trio of kilims aloft like men displaying a flag they are personally proud of. The lighting is bad and the ceiling is low, but nobody in this transaction was ever selling ambiance, they were selling weight, dye, and knot count, and the customers on the floor have the fixed smile of people doing currency conversion in their heads.
The woman's blue tote bag sits by her foot, already halfway to becoming a rug bag, and the man's white sneakers are the least appropriate footwear for a floor covered in a decade of other people's inventory. Sunglasses indoors on two of the sellers suggest either style or simply forgetting to take them off, a small vanity that survives every culture and every decade equally well.
What the picture actually documents, without meaning to, is a transaction ritual that hasn't changed in a century: the buyer sits low so the merchandise looms large, the merchant stands so the merchandise looks even larger, and everyone leaves believing they got the better end of the exchange.
