A small girl in a wool coat, white ankle socks, and a flower-trimmed hat stands in the entrance of a canvas teepee painted with red and blue circles and decorative markings, erected on a mown park lawn for what was almost certainly a school fair or civic event. Someone decided that a hand-painted teepee was an appropriate attraction for a children's outing, and the girl's Sunday-best outfit — the coat, the hat with flowers, the careful socks — confirms this was a dress-up occasion, not a camping trip. The teepee itself is a prop, its decorations a 1950s suburban approximation of Plains Indian iconography, the kind of detail that seemed educational and festive at the time. Behind her, croquet wickets are staked into the grass, and folding tables suggest the wider event spreading across the field. The adults who planned this afternoon believed they were giving children a window onto American history; what they actually created was a fair booth.
