Someone set a rock hammer down on a slope of broken talus and walked off to consult a notebook, the way field geologists did before anyone thought to invent a way of marking a sample that didn't involve sacrificing your only tool for an hour. The hammer's worn wooden handle and pick-shaped head mark it as standard government-survey or university-expedition kit, the sort of object a man carried on his belt for a whole career and never once photographed on purpose.
The rubble itself is the actual subject, though nobody arranging this shot would have said so. Angular, unweathered, freshly broken from a larger outcrop, it is exactly the kind of debris that told a trained eye whether the mountain above was granite, schist, or something worth writing a paper about. In the 1950s that judgment still rested on a hammer, a hand lens, and a man's willingness to climb.
The hammer in frame is doing the job a modern photograph would delegate to a printed scale bar, giving size and context to rock that otherwise looks like any other pile of gray stone. It is a small, practical vanity: proof the surveyor was there, without ever needing to put himself in the picture.
