Someone in the 1960s owned an ultraviolet lamp and considered that purchase the beginning of a serious hobby. Rock and mineral clubs were thick on the ground in that decade, and nothing thrilled a member more than switching off the lights and watching an ordinary gray chunk of stone turn radioactive blue and green, as though the rock had been secretly plotting this reveal the whole time.

The specimens on the table are almost certainly calcite or scapolite riding along with sodalite, minerals that glow spectacularly under shortwave UV for reasons that had more to do with trace impurities than with anything a hobbyist could take credit for. That did not stop collectors from treating the effect as a personal discovery. A small tumbled stone sits apart from the larger pieces, evidence that someone had already begun sorting the collection into categories only they understood.

The wood-paneled surface and the deliberate darkness say this was staged at home, not in a museum, which was standard practice for the amateur mineralogist of the era. Buying a lamp and a few good specimens was, at the time, considered a legitimate substitute for scientific training.
