On the image

Five women have lined up against a white-painted brick wall for a photograph that someone clearly planned in advance, which is evident from the corsages, the white gloves, and the handbag filled with fresh flowers — the kind of accessory that communicates not just an occasion but a specific era's conviction that lunch required dressing as though you might be observed by history. The gas-style lanterns mounted along the facade behind them suggest a restaurant that wanted to seem older and more established than it probably was, which was a standard aspiration for mid-century American dining rooms that had recently discovered atmosphere.

The clothes tell the decade precisely: shirtwaist dresses in pale pink and powder blue, a houndstooth blouse with a bow tie, full skirts at mid-calf, white canvas shoes worn without irony. Somewhere between them they represent most of the approved silhouettes of 1955 or thereabouts, achieved with a seriousness that later generations would reserve for actual formal events. The youngest in the group, standing leftmost, is dressed the most carefully of all — a pattern that has been consistent at women's lunches since approximately forever.
