On the image

The monogram on the breast pocket was the whole point of the robe, a small heraldic flourish meant to announce that this particular bathrobe belonged to someone worth identifying. A boy stands for the camera with his hair combed flat in the manner fathers of the era enforced with water and a comb before any photograph, smiling the tight, obedient smile of a child who understands that this will take one more second than he would like.

The white paneled door and quilted wallpaper behind him belong to a bedroom built when hallways still had brass doorknobs and closets were rationed one per child. Someone bought that robe a size ahead of him, on the household theory that boys grow into their clothes faster than budgets grow into new purchases, and for now the belt is cinched to compensate.

Nothing else in the frame asks to be noticed, which is itself the record: a quiet domestic minute, staged for no occasion except that a camera happened to be loaded and a child happened to be dressed.
