On the image

The camera operator attempted to capture a grand vista of mountains and forests, a common human endeavor when traveling through scenic areas. The resulting blur suggests a firm belief that a good photo opportunity waits for no vehicle, even if the vehicle is moving at speed.

Below the snow-dusted peaks, the landscape shows signs of considerable effort, with large, shaped mounds of earth or tailings amidst scattered trees. It appears someone once thought this was the ideal location for a particular industrial activity, oblivious to the fact that future generations might simply blur it out of polite view.

The historian's note
