On the image
Someone propped this baby up against the brightest part of the yard and pointed a camera at it, on the confident theory that more sky meant a better picture. It did not. The result is a face rendered in perfect, patient detail and a background reduced to the kind of blown-out glare that 1960s home photographers accepted as the cost of doing business outdoors without a flash meter.
The ruffled gingham bib, the kind trimmed with a scalloped lace edge, was standard-issue baby couture of the decade, sewn or bought specifically for occasions exactly like this one. Somebody's arm is visible at the frame's edge, holding the child up for inspection, doing the actual work of babysitting while getting none of the photographic credit.
The baby, for its part, regards the camera with the flat, unbothered skepticism common to infants who have not yet learned that a lens is supposed to mean something. It would be told later that this was a very important picture. It had no opinion on the matter at the time.
