A boy with a summer buzz cut sits at the edge of a backyard patio, red-and-white swim trunks marking him as mid-play in someone's above-ground pool afternoon. He turns to face the camera the way children of the era were trained to, not smiling exactly but cooperating, aware that a parent with a slide camera required a certain amount of standing still for a picture that would not be seen again until a screening decades later.

Behind him is the standard 1960s suburban yard kit: a metal-frame folding chair, a scrubby hedge doing the work of a fence, and enough open lawn to suggest a lot that was still mostly potential when the family moved in. Nobody in 1966 photographed a yard because the yard was interesting; they photographed it because the boy happened to be standing in front of it and the film was already loaded.

A hard blaze of light has eaten the left third of the frame, the kind of accident that happens when a slide sits too long in a box in a hot closet rather than a drawer, the emulsion quietly rehearsing its own disappearance. The picture survived anyway, tinted a strange cool blue that no one at the time would have wanted but that now reads as the color of the whole decade fading on schedule.
