1960年代、誰かがカメラと一本のスライドフィルムを持って博物館のケースの前に立ち、これは価値のある写真だと判断した。確かにそうだったが、照明が示唆する理由によってではなかった。この土器はサポテク製で、雨の神コシホを表現するために粘土で成形されている。眼窩が突き出ていて牙が鋭く、かつて死者とともに埋葬した人々にとって非常に特定の意味を持っていた螺旋状の象形文字の冠をかぶっている。アマチュア写真家は、ギャラリーが手元に持っていた電球を使って、オアハカの2000年の宇宙観をダイナーの看板の色に浸した。

その時代の博物館は、このように前コロンブス時代の物を展示することを好んだ。台座の上に孤立させ、空白の背景に対して隔離し、考古学というより古い彫刻であるかのように扱った。来館者が手工芸品を賞賛することができ、その物体が台座ではなく墓のために作られたという事実に悩まされることなく済んだ。この土器はどちらの配置でも問題なく見える。

カメラが意図せずに捉えたものは、外国の骨董品を休暇中に他のすべてを撮影するのと同じ方法で撮影した時代の自信である。被写体と比べて照明はほぼ関係ないと確信していた。

The historian's note

この物体はメキシコ、オアハカ地域のサポテク伝統における陶製神像土器で、雨と落雷の神コシホを描いている。一般的にアーモンド型または突き出た眼で、目立つ牙と、雲と雨を象徴する螺旋または渦巻き文様を持つ段階的な冠で表現される。この種の土器はサポテク文明の古典期に製作され、モンテ・アルバン中心に、精英層の個人の墓の埋葬品として置かれ、宗教的象徴と身分を示すものの両方として機能していた。

この写真自体は1960年代の博物館慣行を記録している。当時、前コロンブス時代の陶磁器は中立的な背景の前に単純な台座の上に孤立した美術品として頻繁に展示されていた。このキュレーション方式は考古学的背景よりも形式的彫刻的性質を強調したものである。このような展示慣例は、サイト特有の解釈ではなく美的提示を通じて、20世紀半ばのメソアメリカ文明に対する公開理解を形成していた。
