砂漠の高速道路脇のどこかで、女性が車を止め、1960年代の観光客が抵抗できなかったことをした。野生の花を摘むこと。看板に何と書いてあろうが関係なく。彼女は黄色の花序と淡いフロックスの小さな一握りを腰に低く抱え、半ば隠すように持っている。その姿は、その身振りがほのかに違法だと疑いながらも、とにかく楽しもうと計画している普遍的な姿勢だ。

ここで本当に話題をさらっているのはその上に羽織られたジャケットだ。重くビーズで装飾された、仕立てのよい青いウールのブレザー。飛行機の移動がまだ特別な出来事であり、車での移動もそれほど真摯に装っていた時代に、女性が車での旅行のために詰め込むような良質の旅行衣だ。そのようなビーズワークは、砂利と creosote bush を這い回って生き残るために作られたものではない。だからこそそれはまさにそれをするために着用されている。彼女の側にフレームに入る第二の手、結婚指輪が見える。これは、後に「花を摘むために止まった日」と語られた共有された外出を示唆している。

1960年代のロードサイドアメリカでは、誰も花を手で持たずに花そのものを写真に撮ろうとは思わなかった。理由は科学的ではなかったからだ。この写真は、彼女がそこにいたこと、止まったこと、そして車の誰かが「我々はすでに遅れている」と示唆する前に花を手に入れたことを証明するために存在する。
