誰かがカメラを持ってハイマキの密集地に立ち、マンザニタと焼けた枯れ木に半ば飲み込まれたこの一輪のヤグルマの花が、写真を撮る価値があると判断した。1960年代の素人植物学者は、オートフォーカスや目的に特化したマクロレンズを持たず、ただ忍耐力と、ハイキング中に見つけた花はしおれる前に、または他の誰かが最初に見たと主張する前に、永遠の記録に値するはずだという信念を持っていた。

緑の中に伸びている黒くなった枝は、1、2シーズン前に焼けたハイマキの特徴であり、誰も管理できないスケジュールに従って自分自身を再生するカリフォルニアの丘陵地の一種であり、誰もが写真を撮っている。ヤグルマは火災後に戻ってくる最初の開花種の1つであり、写真家はそれを知らず、画像も説明せず、シャッターが切れたときにたまたまそこに立って紫色になっていただけだ。

その結果は、被写体写真というより被写界深度との小さな戦いであり、枝はあらゆる場所で鮮明に焦点が当たっているが、写真家が撮影しようとした唯一のものを除く。それは素人の野外植物学の静かなコメディである。花が外出の全理由であり、花がフレーム内で実際に見るのが最も難しい物だ。

The historian's note

Lupinusはヤグルマと一般的に呼ばれ、California および western United States のハイマキおよび海岸スクラブコミュニティ固有のもので、春の雨後の数週間から数ヶ月に典型的に開花し、野火によって最近クリアされた地面でより多くの豊度で開花する。葉間に見える絡み合った黒くなった枝構造は、ハイマキの火災後の再成長と一致しており、組織化された火災の抑制および燃料管理が標準的な土地慣行となる前にこの植生タイプで繰り返される生態学的イベントである。

野生花および在来植物コミュニティの自然写真は、1960年代の United States で広く普及した趣味となり、州立公園および国立公園への娯楽アクセスの増加、および手頃な価格のカラー写真機器の戦後ブームと重なった。スライドマウントに書かれた大まかな日付または場所以外にラベルが付いていないこのような画像は、現在、植物学者および土地管理歴史家にとって地域植物分布および火災後の回復パターンの重要な二次記録を形成している。
