誰かがこの写真を撮るために砂利の中に膝をついた。白い小さな執拗なラッパ状の花をつけたアメリカアサガオの繁茂で画面を満たすほど近い距離である。1960年代は、色スライドフィルムで武装した素人植物学者の全世代をもたらした。そのひとりひとりが、路傍や小道沿いの野生花を記録することは、気持ちのよい屋外での休憩口実というより、科学的厳密性の小さな行為だと確信していた。

花そのものは、このすべてについて気にかけない。アメリカアサガオは1日だけ花を開き、午後までに閉じ、そして植物学的に可能な限り多くの剥き出しの砂利を覆うという事業に邁進する。スライドカルーセルに値する標本というより雑草として分類されるのが通例であるという事実に無関心である。

The historian's note

アメリカアサガオ(Convolvulus arvensis)は、温帯地域の路傍、攪乱地、砂利の周縁に一般的な広く分布する多年生つる植物で、漏斗形の白からピンク色の花と矢印形の葉で特定できる。根茎によって積極的に拡大し、農業および園芸当局では一般に庭園用装飾品というより侵襲的雑草として見なされている。

野生花の色写真は、1960年代の北米とヨーロッパで一般的な余暇活動となった。これは35mmスライドフィルムの手頃な価格と素人による自然記録用に売り出されたカメラが駆動した。その当時の植物学および庭園クラブは、しばしばスライドベースの識別プロジェクトを組織し、植物の農業的地位に関係なく、地元の植物相を写真撮影およびカタログ化するようメンバーに奨励した。

フレーム内には識別できる位置マーカーがない。砂利基質と生育習性は、そのような素人植物学的写真が一般的だった当時と地域に典型的な、温帯気候の路傍または空き地と一致している。
