The historian's note
Teotihuacan は Mexico City の北東約四十八キロメートルにあり、前コロンブス期アメリカ大陸の最大級の都市のひとつだった。紀元前百年頃から五百五十年頃まで栄え、ピーク時には十万人以上の人口があったと推定されている。その建設者の身元は議論の余地がある。この文明は Aztec よりも前にあり、Aztec は都市を既に放棄された状態で発見し、ここで見られている Pyramid of the Sun や Pyramid of the Moon を含む建造物を、それが建設されてから何世紀もあとになって命名したのだ。
当遺跡の本格的な発掘と復元は二十世紀初頭に始まり、世紀中盤まで続いた。部分的に埋没していた遺跡は、アクセス可能な考古学公園へと変わった。1960年代には当遺跡はメキシコへの国際観光の確立された立ち寄り地となり、首都から道路で到達可能であり、当時のガイドブックと旅程の宣伝にますます力が入れられていた。
Avenue of the Dead – 当 Pyramid of the Moon へ向けて目に見える儀式用道路 – は当遺跡の主要建造物を繋ぎ、考古学地帯の組織軸として今もある。Teotihuacan は1987年に UNESCO 世界遺産に登録された。
