二台目のジープが通り過ぎる前に、この町の誰かはアメリカ兵の経済を理解していた。洗濯物、クリーニング、書店、写真館——すべて波形の屋根の下、一枚の手描きの看板に広告されていた。専門性があるふりをする意味などなかったからだ。入口に立てかけられた段ボールの兵隊こそが本当の売却係だった。ドレスユニフォーム姿の等身大のGIの切り抜きは、自分の写真を撮って家に送ることで、実際の自分より立派に見せるための代役だった。

建物そのものは純粋な即興だ。開放的な空間に打ち付けられたトタン板、厳密に必要でなかった場所には壁がない。これを建てたのは、基地の町では来月も営業していることが唯一確実なビジネスプランだと理解していた者だ。一つの空間に寄りかかった自転車は、すべての顧客が軍用輸送で到着したわけではないことの証拠だった。フェンス脇の鉢植えは、他ではいつでも取り壊せる準備ができているように見えるこの場所における、唯一の恒久性へのしぐさだった。

洗濯カウンターと肖像写真スタジオの組み合わせは無作為ではなかった。それは清潔な制服と家に送る写真が必要な兵士たち、時には同じ午後に両方を必要とする兵士たちを中心に組み立てられた商売全体だった。この店を経営していた誰もが、顧客がどのくらい長く留まるかについて幻想を持ってはいなかった。
