Alguien en este pueblo había descubierto la economía del soldado estadounidense antes de que el segundo jeep pasara: lavandería, tintorería, librería y fotos, todo bajo un techo corrugado, todo anunciado en un único letrero pintado a mano porque no tenía sentido pretender especializarse. El soldado de cartón apuntalado en la entrada es quien hace la venta real—un recorte de tamaño natural de un GI en uniforme de gala, sustituyendo la fotografía que hubieras podido tomarte a ti mismo y enviar a casa viéndote más presentable de lo que te sentías.

El edificio en sí es pura improvisación, láminas de metal clavadas sobre bahías abiertas, sin muros donde las paredes no eran estrictamente necesarias, construido por alguien que entendía que en un pueblo de base el único plan de negocios seguro es seguir en pie el mes que viene. Una bicicleta se recuesta en una bahía como prueba de que no todos los clientes llegaban por transporte militar.
