The historian's note

20世紀半ばの動物園の哺乳動物展示、特にリスのような小型種は、一般的な現代基準によれば、最小限の環境エンリッチメントを備えたコンクリート壁の囲地に収容されていた。1960年代と1970年代に、色フィルムが白黒の代替品よりも一般向けの資料と制度的アーカイブにより説得力のある視覚記録を可能にするにつれて、飼育野生動物の冬期記録は教育機関と動物園で日常的になった。構築された止まり木の存在と管理された空間の規模は、公開閲覧と個体群管理を自然主義的条件よりも優先した戦後の動物園の封じ込め哲学を反映している。この時期の色リバーサルフィルムストック——特にKodachromeとEktachrome——は、科学的および制度的記録の標準であり、画像の色再現と軽微な褪色は、数十年にわたるそのプロセスの老化と一致している。
