The historian's note

Zoo mammal exhibits of the mid-twentieth century, particularly smaller species like squirrels, were typically contained in concrete-walled enclosures with minimal environmental enrichment by modern standards. Winter documentation of captive wildlife became routine in educational institutions and zoos during the 1960s and 1970s, when color film allowed visual records that were more engaging for public-facing materials and institutional archives than black-and-white alternatives. The presence of constructed perches and the managed scale of the space reflect the containment philosophy of postwar zoos, which prioritized public viewing and population management over naturalistic conditions. Color reversal film stock of this period—particularly Kodachrome and Ektachrome—was the standard for scientific and institutional documentation, and the image's color rendering and slight fading are consistent with that process aging over decades.
