巨大な白い石灰岩ブロックを削って作られた空き地に、猿の群れが暮らしている。コンクリートとブルータリズム的な規模が動物の収容にとって妥当な解決策と見なされていた1950年代の動物園が建てたのは、まさにこの種の飼育施設である。動物たちは、自らの置かれた幾何学的環境を恒久的な事実として受け入れた生き物特有の目的意識をもって、何もないプラットフォームや浅い池を渡り歩く。背景には、飼育員あるいは係員が岩壁の間に姿を見せている——この殺風景な白い峡谷を日常として扱う人間の姿は、猿の一生を色褪せた石の上と影の中で過ごすことが明らかに正しい設計であるかのように振る舞っている。猿たち自身は特に苦悩しているようにも、特に活発なようにも見えない。つまり、誰かが彼らにふさわしいと決めた世界に、ただ単に適応したということであり、それは1950年代がその建造物の大半に対して適用したのと同じ陽気な確信をもって記録した運命である。

The historian's note

20世紀半ばの動物園コレクション、特に欧州と北米のそれは、動物福祉や自然に近い生息環境よりも、構造的な耐久性と人間による観覧のしやすさを重視して設計された、採石された石灰岩やコンクリート製の飼育施設を日常的に建設していた。これはそうした原則に基づいて建てられた霊長類施設と思われ、巨大な人工岩層と何もないプラットフォームが環境の全てを構成していた。1950年代はモダニズム的動物園設計時代の最盛期であり、造園家や技術者は動物の収容を、規模、剥き出しの素材、単純化された幾何学によって解決される工学的問題として扱った。こうした施設は、1970年代以降の福祉および生息環境に基づく再設計運動が動物園の理念を根本的に変えるまで、標準的な慣行であり続けた。
