どこかの若い火山の斜面で、ハイカーが写真を撮るため立ち止まり、主に自分自身の写真を撮ってしまった。彼の影は、緩いグレーの火山礫の上に長く暗く伸びている。ここに来た意味はそれだった。このコーンは一世代前には存在しておらず、1960年代までに、ある種の旅人が登る義務を感じるような自然の奇観となっていたのだ。

火山灰に広がる黄色い斑点は地衣類であり、地質学的尺度ではかろうじて冷めた岩の、最初の強情な定着者である。人間的尺度では十分に冷めているが。その下では、より古い森がじゃまされることなく地平線まで続いており、山がまだ到達していないどこかに育つという分別を示していた。

1960年代のハイキング装備を身につけた者は、このような斜面で優雅であると期待せず、写真がそれを確認している。峰頂はなく、勝利のポーズもなく、ただ一つのシルエットと、努力を要するが非常に少ないものを返す緩い岩の斜面があるだけ。そこにいたという事実以外は。
