水辺からスレイマニエ・モスクが景観を支配し、その大きなドームと尖塔が真摯な建築意図を宣言している。人々はゴールデンホーンのまわりでボートを動かしており、日々の通勤の上にそびえ立つ数世紀の歴史に明らかに気づいていない。

1970年代の自動車が水沿いにきちんと駐車されているのは、象徴的な歴史的遺跡であっても駐車ソリューションが必要であることを示唆している。乗客や貨物を運ぶと思われる小型船舶が水上を航行し、忙しい岸辺では通常の生活が意図的なまでに劇的ではない方法で進行している。

このシーンは、素晴らしい成就が最終的には何かを成し遂げようとする人々の背景のシーンの一部に過ぎなくなるという永遠の真実を完璧に示している。歴史は舞台を提供し、現代生活は交通とボートをもたらす。

The historian's note

この写真は、1970年代のイスタンブール、トルコにおけるスレイマニエ・モスクとその周辺を水辺から、おそらくゴールデンホーン近くから撮影したものである。モスクはイスタンブール第三の丘に位置するオスマン帝国皇帝モスクで、スレイマン1世によって委嘱され、帝国建築家ミマール・スィナンによって設計され、1557年に完成した。現在も市内有数の大規模モスクである。

ボートや駐車車両で賑わう水辺地域は、商業および日常生活の中心地であるとともに、重要な港湾都市としてのイスタンブールの継続的な役割を強調している。ボスポラス海峡の大きな入り江であるゴールデンホーンは、歴史的にはビザンティウム帝国およびその後のオスマン帝国の海軍活動と海運を保護する天然の港として機能してきた。

時代の自動車の存在と忙しく実用的な水辺は、20世紀中盤のイスタンブール の継続的な近代化と人口増加を反映しており、同時に都市の古代の遺跡がその独特な特性を引き続き定義していた。
