誰かが車を止め、藪に覆われた斜面を登り、それを築いた王朝の滅亡の頃かどこかで明らかに防衛の役目を終えていた要塞の、お決まりの観光写真を撮った。凹凸のある城壁は、存在意義を失っても頑固に尾根を走り続け、細いミナレットは今なお、誰かが礼拝に現れるのを待つかのように空を指している。
1960年代には、これはパッケージツアーが好んで立ち寄る類の場所だった。本物の廃墟、入場受付もなく、手すりもなく、旅行着のまま自由によじ登れる、崩れた石とアザミの生い茂る斜面があるだけだった。写真に写る誰も、侵食対策や構造調査を気にかけてはいなかった。あの年代には、崩れかけた壁は単なる景観であって、責任問題ではなかったからだ。
この建物は、古い要塞が確実にやってのけることをただ一つ実行した——人々がその過程を止めるのではなく、撮り続けたくなるほど絵になる形で朽ちていくことである。
