誰かが車を路肩に停め、柵のない展望台の縁まで歩いていき、誰も保護していない滝の写真を撮った。これは1960年代の国立公園では標準的な慣行で、風景は自己調整的であると想定され、「濡れると滑りやすい」と書かれた標識が十分な安全工学として数えられていた。

峡谷は許可を求めることなく残りの仕事をこなす。白泡立つ滝は岩の切り込みを通って落ち、さらに下に第二の、より小さい滝に広がる。このような二段階のドラマは、この正確な展望地点に車を停める価値がある理由そのものだった。

1960年代の観光写真撮影者は誰もが、「滝」という言葉以上にこれらのショットに説明文を付けることに手間をかけず、正しくも誰もそれ以上の情報が必要になることはないと信じていた。

The historian's note

この風景は、ロッキーマウンテン西部の森林河川峡谷を示しており、Yellowstone National Parkの滝の国、またはヨーロッパ戦後の自動車観光用に開発された同等の高標高公園回廊と最も矛盾していない。このタイプの路傍展望台は、ヨーロッパ戦後の訪問者増加に対応するため、国立公園局が景観ドライブに沿った立ち寄り地点を拡大した1950年代と1960年代を通じて建設または改善された。

視界に目に入るバリアまたは解釈的な標識がないことは、この時期の典型的なもの;多くのそのような展望台での正式な安全手すりと舗装された展望プラットフォームは、その後のあたらしい公園インフラストラクチャー改善まで標準化されなかった。二段階の滝と急勾配の木立った壁は、この地域の氷河期火山活動によって刻まれた亜高山排水の特徴である。

このような無標識、無名の滝の写真は、その時代の家族旅行コレクションで一般的で、特定のカタログ化されたランドマークのドキュメンテーションではなく、旅のエビデンスとして撮影されていた。
