Someone pulled the car onto the shoulder, walked to the edge of an unfenced overlook, and took a picture of a waterfall no guardrail was protecting anyone from. This was standard practice at national parks in the 1960s, when scenery was assumed to be self-policing and a sign reading SLIPPERY WHEN WET counted as adequate safety engineering.
The canyon does the rest of the work without asking permission. A whitewater cascade drops through a notch in the rock and spreads into a second, smaller falls further down, the kind of two-stage drama that made this exact turnout worth stopping the car for in the first place.
Nobody in 1960s tourist photography bothered to caption these shots beyond the words "the falls," trusting correctly that no one would ever need more information than that.
The historian's note
The scene shows a forested river canyon in the Rocky Mountain West, most consistent with the cascade country of Yellowstone National Park or a comparable high-elevation park corridor developed for automobile tourism in the postwar decades. Roadside overlooks of this type were built or improved through the 1950s and 1960s as the National Park Service expanded pull-offs along scenic drives to accommodate rising post-war visitation.
The absence of any barrier or interpretive signage in view is typical of the period; formal safety railings and paved viewing platforms at many such overlooks were not standardized until later park infrastructure upgrades. The double-drop cascade and steep timbered walls are characteristic of subalpine drainages carved by glacial and volcanic activity in this region.
Photographs of unremarked, unnamed cascades like this one are common in family travel collections of the era, taken as evidence of a trip rather than as documentation of a specific, catalogued landmark.
